How does the gauge of the head pin coordinate with the size of the head pin?
- Gwanda
Since the head pin is made of wire, it is measured in gauges. Common gauges for head pins range from 18-gauge (thick) to 26-gauge (thin). Choose the gauge that will go through the bead hole. For example, a freshwater pearl will have a small drill hole so you will likely need a 24- to 26-gauge head pin.
Measure the gauge of existing head pins with this tool. Measure the hole size of existing beads with this tool set.
To see what a gauge is in millimeters and size appropriately to drill holes, consult the Wire Gauge to Inches and Millimeters Conversion chart.
The size of the head pins relates to the linear measurement, or how long it is, and is usually sized in inches. Headpins come in 1/2 inch to 4 inches long. This variety of sizes accommodates short drops to long dangles.
