Q.
I am needing information on how to remove a glue-on bail from a square clear glass (approx. 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches) that also has an initial in this clear glass piece. (This customer wants to turn this into a pin, instead of a necklace.) Help!!

Acetone (nail polish remover) can be used to break down the adhesive. This is a safe chemical to use on glass, but can have an adverse reaction to other materials, so use caution. Soak the glass pendant in acetone for 30 minutes and then attempt to remove the bail. This may take several soaking sessions. Once you remove the bail, you will need to remove any remaining glue residue.

WD-40 spray lubricant or Goof Off® work well to break down glue to a point where it can be gently scraped off the surface of the glass with a safety razor. Spray the area with the product of your choice then let sit for at least 5 minutes. Being cautious to not scratch the glass, carefully scrape the glue residue away with a razor blade or craft knife that is also lubricated with the product. Once all of the glue is removed, clean and dry the glass thoroughly. Now you are ready to glue on your pin back. Apply G-S-Hypo cement adhesive to the back of the pin back and then set pin back in place. Allow adhesive to dry for 24 hours before wearing.
  • When working with chemicals, be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses and work in a well ventilated area
  • When working with razor blade or craft knife, always cut away from your body
