Earrings with Lampworked Glass Beads, Sterling Silver Beads and Silver-Plated Bead Caps

Inspired by the tradition of giving a White Elephant gift at Christmas, these whimsical carousel earrings feature lampworked glass elephant beads dancing beneath a lacy silver bead cap parasol.

STEP 1
Place a 7mm flower bead cap on a hard surface and press it into a flat daisy with your thumb tip. Repeat so you have a total of four for each earring.
STEP 2
String onto one silver-plated headpin:
  • 3.5mm ribbed bead cap
  • 7mm pressed flower bead cap
  • Glass lampworked elephant bead
  • 7mm pressed flower bead cap
  • 5x1.5mm sterling silver rondelle bead
  • 3.5mm ribbed bead cap
  • 6mm watermelon Malaysia "jade" bead
  • 3.5mm ribbed bead cap
  • 5x1.5mm sterling silver rondelle bead
STEP 3
Using the round-nose pliers, grasp the headpin above the rondelle bead strung onto the headpin. With your free hand, bend the top of the wire over the barrel of the pliers, to form a 90 degree angle.
STEP 4
Place the pliers into the angled section vertically, so one barrel is above and one is below the wire. Bring the wire up and over the top barrel of the pliers so it is now facing down at an angle.
STEP 5
Reposition the pliers so they are horizontal again, with one barrel in the loop and one out and to the right. With chain-nose pliers, or your free hand, grasp the tip of the wire and direct it behind the length of wire extending below the loop you just created.
STEP 6
Grip across the loop with a pair of chain-nose pliers. Grasp the tip of the wire with flat-nose pliers and wrap it around the straight length of wire, starting from below the loop and working toward the rondelle bead, making approximately three tightly wound wraps. Using the side-cutting pliers, trim any excess wire, then press in the cut end with chain-nose pliers.
STEP 7
Using the flat nose pliers, grasp the open side of a silver-plated eyepin and gently twist it open. Pass the open loop through the loop formed above the beads in Step 5. Close the loop.

String onto the silver-plated eyepin:
  • 6mm sterling silver fancy round bead cap, inverted
  • 15mm silver-tone leaf bead cap
  • 12mm silver-plated filigree bead cap
  • 10mm silver-plated scalloped bead cap
  • 6mm ribbed bead cap

  • 9mm sterling silver open flower bead cap
  • Turquoise lampworked glass cylinder bead
  • 9mm sterling silver open flower bead cap
  • 5x1.5mm sterling silver rondelle bead
STEP 8
Using the round-nose pliers, grasp the headpin above the rondelle bead strung onto the headpin. With your free hand, bend the top of the wire over the barrel of the pliers to form a 90 degree angle.
STEP 9
Place the pliers into the angled section vertically, so one barrel is above and one is below the wire. Bring the wire up and over the top barrel of the pliers so it is now facing down at an angle.
STEP 10
Reposition the pliers so they are horizontal again, with one barrel in the loop and one out and to the right. With chain-nose pliers, or your free hand, grasp the tip of the wire and direct it behind the length of wire extending below the loop you just created.
STEP 11
Grip across the loop with a pair of chain-nose pliers. Grasp the tip of the wire with flat-nose pliers and wrap it around the straight length of wire, starting from below the loop and working toward the rondelle bead, making approximately three tightly wound wraps. Trim any excess wire, and then press in the cut end with chain-nose pliers.
STEP 12
Using the chain-nose pliers, grasp the open side of the loop on the earwire and gently twist it open. Thread the open loop through the loop formed above the beads. Close the loop.
STEP 13
Repeat Steps 1 - 12 to make the second earring.
