Bib-Style Necklace and Earring Set with Copper-Plated Pewter Links and Friendly Plastic®

Necklace

STEP 1
String one copper 7x3mm oval bead onto a 1-inch ballpin. Using a pair of chain-nose pliers, round-nose pliers and flush-cutters, form a simple loop on the straight end of the wire. Repeat to create twenty-one copper 7x3mm oval bead drops.
STEP 2
Using scissors, cut a 16mm round piece of purple friendly plastic.
STEP 3
Lay a sheet of Teflon® on a flat heat source such as candle warmer or an electric griddle and turn to a medium low heat setting. Lay a copper 22.5mm open round link with the 16mm round piece of Friendly Plastic (shiny side up) on top of the link on the Teflon. Use a metal pick or awl to maneuver the plastic so you don't burn your fingers.
STEP 4
As the Friendly Plastic begins to melt, it will flow down under the edges of the link. Use a metal awl to maneuver the plastic so you don’t burn your fingers.

Tip: Never leave Friendly Plastic unattended on heat source. When melting Friendly Plastic, avoid temperatures that are set too high as it can cause scorching and undesirable color changes.
STEP 5
Once the plastic has formed to the inside of the link, remove the Teflon sheet from the heat source and lay on a flat surface such as a countertop. Once the plastic has re-hardened, remove the Teflon sheet.
STEP 6
Use a craft knife to trim any excess friendly plastic from the back edge of the link.
STEP 7
Repeat Steps 2 - 6 to add Friendly Plastic to the following components:
  • Five copper-plated pewter 22.5mm open round links; three mint and two turquoise
  • Six copper-plated pewter 17x17x17mm triangle links: six turquoise
  • Eight copper-plated pewter 18x11.5mm oval links: eight purple
  • Three copper-plated pewter 22x22mm open triangle links; two mint and one turquoise
  • Seven copper-plated pewter 15.5mm round links: seven purple
STEP 8
Once all the links are hard, black the back of the plastic on the back side of the links using a black permanent marker.
STEP 9
Using a brush, apply a layer of copper gilders paste over the entire back of the links over the permanent marker.

Allow paste to dry for 12 to 24 hours.

Tip: Thin out with paint thinner or mineral spirits to transform the highly concentrated paste to a preferred consistency. Use in a well-ventilated area.

Using a small paintbrush, paint a thin layer of DesignaSeal topcoat finish over the back of each of the links. DesignaSeal is dry to the touch in approximately 15 minutes and if desired, a second coat can be added after approximately 45 minutes. A full drying time of 24 hours is recommended.
STEP 10
Using a pair of chain-nose pliers and bent-nose pliers, open a 5x4.5mm jumpring. Pass it through the ring on the first portion of the clasp and the first hole on one purple 18x11.5mm oval link. Close the jumpring.
