Using scissors, cut four 3-foot strands of waxed cotton cord.
Using flush-cutters, cut two 6-inch lengths of gold Zebra Wire™.
Match up the ends of four strands of cord. Fold the cords in half and match up the ends, creating eight strands. Using one 6-inch length of gold Zebra Wire, insert 1 inch through the fold in the cord then wrap the wire 2-3 times around itself leaving the long end of the wire straight. Pass the straight end of the wire through one 6mm gold-finished cord end so it fits snugly around the cord and wire. Using round-nose pliers, bent-nose pliers and flush-cutters, create a wrapped loop on the straight end of the wire.
Insert the cord end into the center of the kumihimo disc.
Hold the folded cord end firmly in place on the underside of the disc while setting up the face of the disc in a basic 8-cord pattern. Make sure the cords are tight in their slots.
To set up the disc, insert strands into the slots on either side of the dots--slots #32 and #1, bottom slots #17 and #16, right side slots #8 and #9 and left side slots #24 and #25.
Adding beads to the cord:
Repeat to add twenty-three cobalt #6 seed beads to cords in slot #1 and slot #17.
Remove the cord from slot #32 then thread twenty-three red #6 seed beads onto the cord and push them down to the bottom. Set cord back into slot #32. Repeat for slot 16.
Wind your cords and beaded cords onto Huggy Spool® bobbins to help avoid tangling
Hang a fishing weight from the tail of your cord to help maintain constant tension
With North at the top of the disc, you are ready to start your braid. Always start your braid with the bottom left strand using the following braiding pattern:
Helpful Hint: To pause in your braiding, always remember to stop when you have three strands at the top.
Bottom left #17 up to top left #31--now there are three strands at the top
Move top right #1 down to bottom right #15
Rotate disc counter clockwise 1/4 turn. The East slots #8 and #9 are now at the top.
Move strand from slot #25 up to slot #7
Repeat to move strand from slot #9 down to slot #23
Rotate disc counter clockwise 1/4 turn. South slots #16 and #17 are now at the top.
Repeat this pattern of "left up, right down, rotate" until you reach 1-1/4 inches in braid length
Continue braiding in this pattern while adding one bead from each beaded strand when moving that strand. After braiding about 5 inches, the beads should all be added.
Repeat Step 7 braiding without beads for 1-1/4 inches.
Cut the cords leaving a 3/4 inch tail and fold the tail in half. Using one 6-inch length of gold Zebra Wire, insert 1 inch through the fold in the cord, then wrap the wire 2-3 times around itself leaving the long end of the wire straight. Pass the straight end of the wire through one 6mm gold-finished cord end so it fits snugly around the cord and wire. Using round-nose pliers, bent-nose pliers and flush-cutters, create a wrapped loop on the straight end of the wire.
Open one 5mm gold-plated jumpring and pass it through the wrapped loop on one end of the braided cord and through the loop on one gold-plated 12x7mm swivel lobster claw clasp. Close the jumpring.
Open one 8mm gold-plated twisted jumpring and pass it through the wrapped loop on the opposite end of the braided cord. Close the jumpring.
Open one 5mm gold-plated jumpring and pass it through the loop on one enamel and gold-finished 28x16mm "USA" with stars charm and one braided cord in the center of the beaded cord. Close the jumpring.
