Clutch with Leather Scrap and Gold-Plated Brass Chain

STEP 1
Using a craft knife cut two 7x3-1/2 inch lengths of black scrap leather and one 7x3-inch length of Tilapia fish leather.
STEP 2
Position the 7x3-inch length of fish leather 1-1/2 inches from top edge of the front of one piece of 7x3-1/2 inch black scrap leather. Mark the placement of the piece of fish leather with an awl or pencil onto the black leather slightly under the upper piece of fish leather. Place a thin layer of Mod Podge® glue sealer adhesive on the back of the 1-1/2 inch edges (left and right edges) and across the bottom of fish leather and on the front of the black leather between the mark and the edge of the leather. Press the two pieces of leather together. Let the adhesive set for 24 hours for optimal adhesion. Make sure to use proper ventilation when using this product.
STEP 3
Position the second piece of 7x3-1/2 inch black scrap leather over the first with the back sides together. Fold the fish leather flap over the front piece of black leather. Crease the flap so it will stay folded over. Mark the front of the fish leather 1-3/4 inches from the left front corner of the black leather and 1-1/2 inches from the top. Mark the front of the black leather piece in the same position.
STEP 4
Using a rotary hole punch, punch the one 4mm hole on the mark on the fish leather. Repeat to punch a second 4mm hole on the mark in black leather.
STEP 5
Place the domed cap snap through the hole on the fish leather from front to back. Turn the leather over to the back side placing the dome in the snap anvil on a wood block. Fit the insert portion of the snap over the rivet on the dome cap. Use the line 20 snap setter with a ball peen hammer and finish the rivet.

Repeat to attach the back portion of the snaps through the hole on the front piece of black leather attaching from the back to the front of the leather.
STEP 6
Using flush-cutters cut one 4-1/2 foot length of 1mm natural leather cord, one 14-inch length of gold-plated 9mm twisted cable chain and cut the loop off of the 16mm ring portion of the toggle clasp.
STEP 7
Open the first link on the 14-inch length of gold-plated 9mm twisted cable chain. Pass it over the 16mm ring. Close the link. Repeat to attach the last link on the 14-inch length of gold-plated 9mm twisted cable chain to the 16mm ring.
STEP 8
Using leather hole-punch pliers, punch the one 2mm hole 1/8 inch from the top left corner 1/8 inch from the edge of the front black leather piece. Continue to punch one 2mm hole every 1/8 inch around the left side, bottom and right side of the front black leather piece.

Repeat to punch one 2mm hole every 1/8 inch around the left side, bottom and right side of the back black leather piece (through both the black leather and fish leather where glued together at the top).
STEP 9
Position the front black leather piece over the back black leather piece back to back. Place the 16mm ring between the pieces of leather in the upper left corner.
STEP 10
Thread the end of the 4-1/2 foot piece of 1mm leather cord through the eye of a heavy craft needle. Position the first 2 inches of leather cord between the two pieces of black leather along the left side, with the working end of the cord coming out of the upper left corner of the black leather above the 16mm ring. Pass the needle through the first hole on the back black piece of leather coming out the first hole on the front black piece of leather. Pass cord around the outer edge of both of the pieces of leather. Continue to sew the leather pieces together, capturing the 16mm ring in the first few stitches. Make sure the end of the cord is captured in the stitches down the length of the first side.

Continue to stitch the leather pieces together around the left, bottom and right sides of the black leather. Pass the end of the cord between the pieces of leather on the inside of the clutch. Cut any excess cord using flush-cutters.
