Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
Three miles south of the Florida-Georgia line in a very small town called Penetton.

Describe your artistic style.
Tree form wire jewelry including wire wrapping and wire sculpture.

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
I will look at a bead-stone until it tells me how to design it. I also get quite a few ideas from other artists in Fire Mountain Gems' catalogs.

What materials do you most enjoy working with?
Gold-filled wire, natural stones and crystals.

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Black Magic Necklace

What inspired this design?
The black onyx bead and the tube beads which felt Oriental in nature.

How did it come together?
I thought it through until it was fixed in my mind.

Share Your Background

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
When I was three years old, I was stringing buttons, then shells, by the time I was 12 I was selling my jewelry to mom's friends.

Who introduced you to beading?
My aunt Helen's button box.

Do you have an artistic background?
I also teach painting.

How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®?
I have no idea. I have been enjoying your company for several years.

What other hobbies do you have?
Gardening. I am a flower shop judge.

Do you belong to any beading societies or beading groups?
Not really, but I teach at William Howard School of Lapidary Arts in Georgia.

Beading Success

What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
It is a part-time career, but my favorite part of jewelry is teaching. It's cheaper than a psychiatrist.

If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
I do a few shows a year and I have customers who repeat.

Do you participate in any charity fundraisers?
Yes. I submit work for charities. We raised money for newborn babies that have been abandoned in Florida and the Right to Life groups.

Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Practice.
