Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
Clarence, New York

Describe your artistic style.
Well it is still evolving. Right now I would say that bead embroidering is in the lead.

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
Just about anything. Coloring books that my granddaughter has, designs, ideas from pictures. Nature, post cards, birthday cards, etc.

What materials do you most enjoy working with?
I love sparkle, any sparkle. Swarovski, seed beads, the Toho 3-cut seed beads, charlotte seed beads. Cabs. Vintage jewelry.

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Midnight Moon

What inspired this design?
A Barbie costume... which led to a moon, then if you have a moon, you need stars. And I loved looking at the stars when my mother used to take us camping. And it all came together. As I mentioned, my ideas come from just about anything and then takes on a life of its own. There are times that I can't wait to see how my necklace will look.

How did it come together?
I planned some things, started with a picture and then let the design lead me. And it sparkles...

Share Your Background

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
I started with Halloween costumes for my children. My mother used to make her own Halloween costumes for us as we were growing up. I continued her tradition, and things just evolved... a lot.

Who introduced you to beading?
I worked with a Native American as my co-worker. She invited me to a Pow Wow and WOW... the outfits, the beading, the sparkle!!! I was hooked.

Do you have an artistic background?
The family is talented in music, and all of us have some degree of talent, which is being passed down to our children.

How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®?
From a beading magazine. I believe I still have one of my first catalogs, which was 10 years or more ago.

What other hobbies do you have?
Gardening. My passion during the summer. Making new costumes for my grandchildren, and beading during the winter. And always reading.

Beading Success

What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
I love to bead, so when watching movies etc, I bead. I am usually at my "work table" every day. It relaxes me, ah, when things go right... I have sold my jewelry at 2 local stores. But this is a part-time love.

If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
I have entered contests, and I wear my jewelry. I was wearing one of my necklaces, and I was in a store which featured local artists, and the owner approached me regarding my necklace. I was so excited. And my hobby became a part-time career.

Do you participate in any charity fundraisers?
Breast Cancer. My youngest sister had breast cancer at the age of 42. She is doing fine now, but I participate in any fundraiser for breast cancer.

Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Enjoy what you do. There is so much information that is available. Books, videos, classes, the internet. I had no real classes for my jewelry ideas, I learned from books. And I have loved the "learning" process. And with my jewelry that I would wear, became "advertising", though I did not realize that until the owner of a store approached me. There are many places to sell what you make, on the internet, or local stores or craft shows. But the best thing I enjoy, is just the making.
