Fire Mountain Gems and Beads' Jewelry-Making Contest 2010 featuring Swarovski crystal
Meet the Designer-Artist
Where do you live? Stowe, Vermont
Describe your artistic style. My artistic style is a blend of vintage and modern.
What inspires you as a designer-artist? I am inspired by other jewelry, whether seen on a person, in a store online, but at the same time the beads themselves also inspire me. When I see other jewelry, I am sparked to create something of my own, but the size, texture and color of the beads can be the tipping point for creating something beautiful and unique.
What materials do you most enjoy working with? I absolutely love to use pearls and crystals. New favorite material is brass and copper components.
What inspired this design? I was inspired to design this necklace after looking through a book about the history of Cartier jewelry. Cartier jewelry has always produced timeless jewelry and I knew that by using Swarovski crystals I too could create a piece of jewelry that would be classic but also simply unique.
How did it come together? The difficult part was to decide on a main color for the design. Once I finally chose a color, I followed the design I has in mind. The final product took a couple of revisions until I was truly happy with the outcome.
Share Your Background
When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading? I began making jewelry about 17 years ago. A new bead shop opened up in town and I was in awe of all the different beads and potential for creating a variety of items. The first class I took was making a peyote amulet purse.
Who introduced you to beading? My mom. She was the one who brought me to the bead shop and introduced me to the world of beads!
Do you have an artistic background? I have always been attracted to arts and crafts. I have always enjoyed the process of creating and seeing the progression to the finished product.
How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®? I think I must have seen an advertisement in a bead magazine. I have been a Fire Mountain Gems customer for so long, I can't quite remember.
What other hobbies do you have? I really enjoy being outdoors, traveling, cooking and spending time with my husband and our two dogs.
Do you belong to any beading societies or beading groups? I do not belong to a bead society or group, but I do work at a local bead store. The bead store has become a great place for inspiration, learning new techniques and meeting other people who love to bead.
What role does jewelry-making play in your life? I find jewelry-making to be soothing and calming and a way to be in my own world, even if just for a few hours. Currently my jewelry-making is a hobby that I would like to change into at least a part-time career.
If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry? This is my first contest, but I do hope to someday have a website and become established in the local art community.
Do you participate in any charity fundraisers? In the past I have donated jewelry to charity fundraisers and will certainly continue to do so.
Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists? Have fun and don't be afraid to express your own style.
