Meet the Designer-Artist

Describe your artistic style.
Very earthy in form and color. I love tiny detailed work. My favorite metallic is bronze. Sometimes after I have worked with beads for awhile I will close my eyes and see patterns.

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
Natural form and color in all the infinite combinations possible. I particularly love plant life. I also love the beads! The colors are so inspiring.

What materials do you most enjoy working with?
Glass, oil paints, beads (delicas,) crystals and natural stones.

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Fire and Ice

What inspired this design?
This was my first attempt to bead a bottle. I am thinking of starting a line of ''bottle jewelry.''

How did it come together?
I had a basic plan which developed as I went. My colors seem to ''pick themselves'' as I go along, as do some of the beads.

Share Your Background

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
I started about 2 years ago. I was in a hobby store and picked up a book on beading. My mother was with me and decided to buy the book and supplies for my birthday. (Thanks Mom!)

Who introduced you to beading?
No one really. I got the basics from a few books and went from there.

Do you have an artistic background?
I have always been artistic. I think I have tried almost every art form out there. By third grade I had teachers asking me to help with their bulletin boards.

How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®?
My sister Nancy makes jewelry. She told me about you. We both have things on our website. She set up the site herself!

What other hobbies do you have?
Painting (mostly oil,) sewing, and plants. I have a very green thumb.

Beading Success

What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
I love it. I find it relaxing. It is a fun pastime that I hope will take off enough to be a full-time career.

If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
I have pieces on our website- www.NKPENA.com. But I haven't got any bottle work on it yet. I have some pieces in stores. I would like to try the renaissance fair.

Do you participate in any charity fundraisers?
I have donated to a fundraiser for someone with cancer. I have been thinking about teaching some free beading classes through the college.

Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Believe in yourself and enjoy what you're doing. Passion is creativity.
