I have some copper pieces that I would like to look a bit darker, more antique. What product should I use to do this?

If the pieces are plated, they will most likely not accept an added antique finish. If the pieces are not plated or coated with a clear top coat, clean all pieces well then dip into a prepared liver of sulfur bath.

After adding the patina, enhance the look by removing excess darkening with a soft brush (such as an old toothbrush) and soapy water. Polish by hand with a polishing cloth or—if your pieces do not include soft stones, such as turquoise and pearl—toss into a tumbler with steel shot to polish and to bring up copper highlights of any pieces.

There are two forms of liver of sulfur available—powdered and gel. Both work well with warm water. Follow all chemicals' package directions for how to use instructions and be aware of any label warnings.

In the future, you may wish to use antique copper-plated findings and components in your vintage-style designs, with a fine selection made by hand.
