Dear Jewelry-Making Family and Friends,
Because most all of us know or love someone who has been affected by breast cancer, I wanted to share a couple of stories about my immediate family.
Dear Jewelry-Making Family and Friends,
Because most all of us know or love someone who has been affected by breast cancer, I wanted to share a couple of stories about my immediate family.
My mother lost a breast to a complete mastectomy all while she was a caregiver to my bedridden father. The procedure was successful for a 15-year period. Thinking back on it, I didn’t begin to understand her emotional strength until much later in my life! To keep her spirits up, when the weather was good, she attended yard sales every Saturday morning with her friends and neighbors. My mother was loved by everyone who came into her life. No matter who they were, what station in life, what color they were. She just loved them. She lost her battle with breast cancer when it showed up again and had migrated, but we had her to love for 15 more years.
Then my sister developed Inflammatory Breast Cancer, a very highly aggressive disease that was hard to diagnose because it didn’t show up on mammograms. But she knew something was wrong and kept searching for answers. She wound up with a renowned oncologist at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. With a Stage 4 diagnosis, the doctor advised her that her best chance at long term survival was a new treatment being tested at Washington University, called High Dose Chemo Stem Cell Therapy. This was a long, difficult process but my sister was brave and determined. It is now twenty-five years later. She said that several others that were in the program are still with us today.
The treatments nowadays are changing radically and are not as difficult with a much higher success rate. She specifically asked me to tell you, “You should not be afraid to fight for yourself.”
