I want to use copper spacers and clasps in some of my necklaces, and wonder if when people wear them, will their skin turn green? Is it okay to mix gold and copper?
Copper can turn skin green when in direct contact for an extended time. The degree to which that happens depends upon the amount of salt, body oil, lotion and sunscreen with which it comes in contact. Most copper findings and beads are coated to inhibit tarnish, but those coatings can wear off over time. We suggest using copper in jewelry that will not rub against the skin, or that you wear those pieces occasionally, not every day. In addition, you can use Jewelry Shield™, a liquid you can paint over jewelry to prevent discoloration. And, it is absolutely fine to mix your metals! In fact, it gives jewelry added interest to do so.
