How to Create Diamonds
with Double Half-Hitch Knots
Follow along with jewelry designer Jude to learn how to create diamonds with macramé double half-hitch knots.
Instructions
Basic Diamond
Step 1
Secure a holding cord across a macramé board. Secure five working cords on the holding cord using lark's head knots.
Note: The width of the finished piece is altered by starting with a different number of knotting cords.
Step 2
Using pins, secure the two center knotting cords just above where the diamond will begin.
Cross the two center knotting cords, left over right, and extend over the outer knotting cords. Secure the now right-hand crossed cord with a pin.
Step 3
Create a double half hitch knot on the right-hand crossed cord with the left-hand crossed cord.
Step 4
Position the left-hand crossed cord at the same angle as the right-hand cord on the left side of the knotting cords, then secure with a pin. The crossed cords are now the holding cords.
Step 5
On the right holding cord, starting with the inner right-hand knotting cord, create tight double half hitch knots with each of the four right knotting cords.
Repeat with the left holding cord and knotting cords.
Step 6
Insert a pin snugly against the inside of the right-hand holding cord and the last knot. Repeat with the left-hand holding cord.
Step 7
Cross the holding cords at the center of the knotting cords, right over left, and secure just below the end of the diamond with a pin.
Continue to tie half hitch knots around the anchor cord moving in the opposite direction to create a downward angle with the knots. Repeat on the opposite side to finish the diamond.
Step 8
Continue knotting along the now left holding cord, staring with the outer knotting cord, create tight double half hitch knots with the four left knotting cords.
Repeat with the right holding and knotting cords.
Step 9
Create a double half hitch knot on the left holding cord with the right holding cord.
Fancy Diamonds
Step 1
Complete Steps 1 - 7 of the Basic Diamond instructions.
Step 2
Bring the inner left knotting cord over the other left knotting cords, parallel to the first row of knots and under the holding cord, then create a double half hitch knot on the holding cord.
Place the knotting cord in a waiting position and repeat with the three remaining left knotting cords.
Repeat with the right knotting and holding cords.
Step 3
Create a double half hitch knot on the left holding cord with the right holding cord.
Square Knot
Step 1
Complete Steps 1 - 6 of the Basic Diamond instructions.
Step 2
Using the two outer knotting cords, create a square knot around the six center cords.
Repeat until the square knots reach just above where the diamond will end.
Step 3
Complete Steps 7 - 9 of the Basic Diamond instructions.
Beads
Step 1
Complete Steps 1 - 6 of the Basic Diamond instructions.
Step 2
String beads onto the knotting strings in the pattern of your choosing. If desired, secure each bead using an overhand knot.
