Instructions

This vintage-like brooch doubles as a pendant. Wear as is to accent your lapel, or string onto a chain or cord of your choice for a fashionable necklace. Cool colors are perfect for every season.

Step 1
Step 1 - Cut 2x2" square of Lacy's Stiff Stuff

Cut Lacy's Stiff Stuff beading medium to a 2x2-inch square. Using a dowel or toothpick glue the cabochon in the center of the beading medium; allow the glue to dry.

Step 2

Cut one yard of Nymo® and thread on a needle; knot the end of the thread. Do not double the thread.

Step 3

Pass the needle and thread up from underneath the beading foundation pulling until the knot is flush against the underside and the needle is a beads width away from the cabochon.

Step 4
Step 4 - Backstitch around cabochon

Backstitch around the cabochon with the size 15 seed beads. (see below for instructions on the backstitch)

Step 5

Following the shape of the cabochon, backstitch a second row of size 15 seed beads half-way around the cabochon. Keep the stitches snug.

Step 6
Step 6 - Stitch beads around foundation

Stitch the 4mm turquoise beads onto the beading foundation using the backstitch method, going through the larger beads twice to secure.

Step 7
Step 7 - Follow the curve of the cabochon

Following the curve of the cabochon, stitch bugle beads on using the backstitch method stitching to the end of the second row of size 15 seed beads.

Step 8

Backstitch a row of size 11 seed beads the rest of the way around the cabochon; adding in the 4mm Czech glass bead where you'd like it.

Step 9

Tie off a knot on the back of the beadwork when the beading is completed.

Step 10
Step 10 - cut out the brooch

Carefully cut out the brooch as close to the beading as possible taking care not to cut the threads.

Step 11

Glue the pin back finding to the back of the beadwork; allow the glue to dry.

Step 12
Step 12 - Cut a 2x2" square of leather

Cut the leather to a 2x2-inch square. Using the pencil, make marks on the leather indicating where the pin back finding openings will go.

Step 13

Cut small slits where the marks are drawn.

Step 14
Step 14 - Slide leather over finding

Slide the leather over the finding.

Step 15

Using a dowel or toothpick, spread a small, even layer of glue to the back of the beadwork and secure the suede to the beadwork; allow the glue to dry.

Step 16

Thread a needle with about 12 inches of single thread and tie a knot at the end.

Step 17

Bury the knot somewhere in the edge of the beadwork coming out between the beading and the suede.

Step 18

Begin picot brick stitch around the edges. Pass the needle down through the leather. Pick up three size 15 seed beads.

Step 19
Step 19 - Stitch leather to beadwork

Pass the needle up through the leather and through the beadwork edge.

Step 20

Pass the needle up through just the last bead on your thread and pull the beads snug against the edge.

Step 21

Pick up two size 15 seed beads.

Step 22

Pass the needle down through the edge of the beadwork once again.

Step 23

Pass your needle up through the last bead on your thread and pull snug. Continue around the entire piece with two seed beads.

Step 24

When this row is complete, weave the needle down through the beadwork tying off several knots.

Step 25

Clip the threads.

Step 26

To add a simple drop, cut 12 inches of thread and place a needle on both ends.

Step 27

String on the drop and let it flow to the center of the thread.

Step 28

String on the desired beads on either side of the threads keeping it equal on both sides.

Step 29

Find the center three picots on the bottom edge of your brooch.

Step 30

Pass one needle through the picot point to the immediate right of the three picots.

Step 31
Step 32 - Pass the needle through

Pass the other needle through the picot point on the immediate left of the three center picot points.

Step 32

Weave the threads through the edges of the beadwork, through the beading on the brooch and tie off several knots. Clip the threads.

Step 33

This can be worn as a brooch or using the neckpiece component worn as a pendant. Simply open the pin back, slide the neckpiece component onto the pin and close the clasp.

Step 4

Slide the pendant onto the desired chain, choker or beadwork.

Additional Instructions

Backstitch:

  • Add two beads and pull them down to the foundation, laying them in the direction you want them to go.
  • Pass your needle down through the foundation next to where the second bead rests, pulling all the thread and beads down tight to the foundation.
  • Then pass the needle back up from the underside of the beadwork where your first bead was strung.
  • Pass your needle through the beads one more time exiting the second bead.
  • String on two more beads and pass the needle down through the foundation against the 4th bead.
  • Come back up between the 1st and 2nd beads, pass through the 2nd, 3rd and 4th beads again, and string on two more beads. Continue on in this manner.
