"Feathering" Jewelry and Accessories

Design Ideas MD36, NJ3C

While they never truly went away, feathers are making a comeback, adorning earrings, dresses and sweaters. Both versatile and timeless, feathers match everything from ultra-formal looks to laidback and casual styles.

Light as a Feather

One trend that seems to be everywhere now is light and fluffy feathers. These cheerful components lift any outfit with their wispy, downy plumes. Pairing with gold heightens the warm and soft feel.

Western Classic

Feathers and Western styles are inextricably linked and have been for decades. They adorn hats, belts and belt buckles, bolo ties and jewelry in the shape of beads, charms, drops and findings. Pair with turquoise and silver for the classic southwestern look. Choose polished silver for modern designs or patinated metals to create rustic-looking pieces.

Boho Feathers

Creating boho designs is easy with feathers. Long and airy feathers in calming neutrals feel effortless when paired with leather. Choose gold metal to compliment natural tones or silver to create an interesting juxtaposition between the breeziness of the feathers to the coolness of the silver.

Elegant and Refined

Peacock feathers are perhaps the most elegant of all. Their strong pattern and beautiful jewel tones blend well with sparkling crystal and gold or silver. Highly stylized geometrical feather drops and embellishments create glamorous art deco-style jewelry.

Tips for Attaching Natural Feathers

Natural feathers are easy to use, and there are many ways to attach them. Here are some methods to try:

  • Crimp tubes with a loop are the easiest way. Insert the end of the feather into the tube and crimp down with pliers.
  • Cord ends and bead cones work best for multiple feathers. Secure with a strong adhesive like Devcon® epoxy.
  • A fold-over bail or bead tip covers the top of the quill with a stylish metal component.
  • Wire-wrap feather ends with sterling silver and gold-filled wire. Choose dead-soft wire for its malleability around fragile feather ends.
  • Knot with hemp and satin cord, applying a drop of glue like E6000® Fray Lock™ to the feather and the knot before tightening to secure.
  • Cord coils accommodate multiple feathers for layered designs or feathers with substantial quills.

Although feathers are simple to work with, they can require prep work. Trim the quill first and remove any down feathers from the part that connects to the component to ensure a perfect match.
