Using a black and white copier and one 8x10-inch shrinkable plastic sheet, copy one Monarch butterfly measuring approximately 5x7 inches.
Repeat to copy two Monarch butterflies measuring approximately 4x6 inches.
Note: Copy on the rough side of the plastic sheet as ink will not adhere to the smooth side. Test your copier by drawing an X on a blank sheet of paper and feeding it through the copier. The copied side determines rough side up or down.
Use colored artist’s pencils to apply color on rough side of plastic.
Using a black permanent marker, trace the outline of the copied butterfly patterns to clean up the line definition, then draw a 9mm round circle outside the pattern to mark your hole punch locations.
Using scissors, carefully cut out copied butterfly patterns including the 9mm round circles.
Using a standard 1/4 inch handheld single-hole paper punch, punch out the center of the 9mm drawn circle.
Using a metallic glitter gel-style pen on the shiny side of the butterfly pattern (this will be the front), trace the wing veins, dots and body of the butterfly pattern. Allow metallic glitter gel to dry.
Place a parchment paper or non-stick aluminum foil on oven tray or cookie sheet. To shrink, place butterfly patterns color side up on the parchment paper and bake in pre-heated craft oven at 325 degrees Fahrenheit (163 degrees Celsius) for approximately 1 - 3 minutes (according to manufacturer’s instructions). After pieces lay flat, allow an additional 30 seconds of baking time to complete the process.
Remove tray or cookie sheet from oven. Move parchment paper/aluminum foil to a cool surface. While still hot, use a flat object, to lightly press shrinkable plastic pieces flat until cool (approximately 15 seconds).
Using Mod Podge® matte sealer or coat Mona Lisa Metal Leaf top coat, seal the copied (back) side of the shrinkable plastic butterfly. Apply top coat to pieces by gently brushing on thin layers using care to avoid smearing the copied design.
Using flush-cutters, cut two 8-1/2 inch lengths of sterling silver 12x6mm diamond link chain.
String one Swarovski crystal Indian red 6mm bicone bead onto one sterling silver 2-inch headpin. Using round-nose pliers and chain-nose pliers, form a simple loop on the straight end of the headpin creating one Indian red 6mm bicone bead drop.
Attach a sterling silver 9x2mm ice-pick bail to one hole on the butterfly focal.
Repeat to attach one sterling silver 9x2mm ice pick bail to the second hole on the butterfly focal.
Open one sterling silver 4mm round jumpring and pass it through the loop on one of the 9x2mm ice-pick bails and the first link on one 8-1/2 inch length of sterling silver 12x6mm diamond link chain. Close the jumpring.
Repeat to attach the second 9x2mm ice-pick bail to the first link on the second length of sterling silver 12x6mm diamond link chain.
Open one sterling silver 4mm round jumpring and pass it through the loop on the Indian red 6mm bicone bead drop, the loop on the toggle ring portion of the clasp and the last link on the right side length of sterling silver chain. Close the jumpring.
Repeat to attach the toggle bar portion of the clasp to the last link on the left side length of sterling silver chain using one 4mm round jumpring.
Open the loop on one sterling silver 18mm fishhook earwire and pass it through the punched hole on one shrinkable plastic butterfly earring drop. Close the loop.
Repeat to create the second earring.
