|Meet the Designer-Artist
Where do you live?
Traverse City, Michigan
Describe your artistic style.
Classic jazz. I look for excitement in the interplay of colors, shapes and brightness.
What inspires you as a designer-artist?
I'm inspired by the materials I have to work with. I choose either a focal or dominant bead and design the piece around that.
What materials do you most enjoy working with?
I enjoy working at present with shell, pearl and gemstone beads. I will someday try some wire work with crystals.
What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
South Seas Reflection
What inspired this design?
The design was inspired by the colors of the paua shell carved poppy. My aim was to give the poppy a frame of pearls.
How did it come together? For example, did you plan it out or did it define itself once you began working?
The design defined itself once I began working. Cultured pearls were chosen as how they related to the poppy.

Who introduced you to beading?
I looked to Fire Mountain Gems and Beads for ideas and techniques.
Do you have an artistic background?
No. My background would consist of home decorating, gardening and observation.
How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®?
I discovered Fire Mountain Gems and Beads when searching for sources for beading dance costumes.
What other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy gardening and sewing. I am in church choir and I practice the clarinet.
What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
There is a feeling of satisfaction in seeing a project come to completion. Jewelry-making was a hobby, but recently a part-time career.
If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
I am searching for ways--still to have a first "jewelry-party." I plan to enter contests.
Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Don't be afraid to try.
