Kim Miraglia

Mexican Dunes Jasper and Hessonite Garnet Necklace
Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
Guthrie, Kentucky

Describe your artistic style.
It's hard for me to describe my own style, but have been told it's simple and elegant, and I use wire to showcase stones. So, simple elegance, I'm good with that.

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
Victorian design inspires me to no end; I can look at Victorian designs for hours, have dozens of books, patterns, and wallpaper, and just can't get enough. I am not sure if it comes through in my work but I am definitely inspired by it.

What materials do you most enjoy working with?
I enjoy silver wire the most! But I love using natural stones, agate being one of my all time favorites. I love faceted beads, smooth beads, teardrop beads, flower beads and stones cut in any shape. I love beads. I love stones. And I love working with them both!

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Mexican Dunes Jasper and Hessonite Garnet Necklace

What inspired this design?
The stone was inspiring enough; I had to do something with it!

How did it come together? For example, did you plan it out or did it define itself once you began working?
I started with the centerpiece, and the beads seemed perfect. They are simple, round, and don't compete with the centerpiece but have a beauty of their own that can't be denied.

Share Your Background

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
I began making jewelry to sell online in 1999, but always was the girl who made beaded necklaces in high school. I didn't consider a career in it until I discovered the internet.

Who introduced you to beading?
Yes, I definitely have an artistic background. I worked as a production artist for several years, have won awards in contests in drawing, photography, and painting. I have a BFA in Graphic Design and have created many fantastic pieces of art through the process of obtaining that degree through various classes like print making, illustration and pottery just to name a few. The best artwork I've done was during those years in college obtaining my BFA. My father's side of the family is very artistic as well as being very musically talented. My father was a background singer for a top ten singing group in the late '60s (which I am very proud of saying!).

How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and BeadsĀ®?
I discovered Fire Mountain Gems in 1999 when I was doing online bead shopping, one of my all time favorite things to do at the full time job I had which gave me internet access. I remember the site back then, so different than it is now, and I remember ordering mainly from the "sales" page where the second hand stuff was sold, haha.

What other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy crocheting, pottery, stone cutting, but jewelry pretty much engulfs my life at the present time. I also enjoy wine making (a lot).

Beading Success

What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
Jewelry is my full time (plus!) job. I'm always working, I never have enough done, I'm always planning something in my head and always wishing I was four people instead of one so I could get it all done. I have a never-ending list of things I need or want to do as far as jewelry goes.

If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
I have a main website at which I advertise on Facebook, and also have several shop sites that are linked to the main site. I sell only online and I'm always doing some kind of online marketing.

Do you participate in any charity fundraisers?
I don't participate in anything regularly, but have done it in the past when asked. I have participated in fund raising awareness for autism.

Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Don't stop doing what you love!
