Meet the Designer-Artist
Where do you live?
Sparks, Nevada
What inspires you as a designer-artist?
Beauty of nature. Art work of all the beading artists.
What materials do you most enjoy working with?
Seed beads, natural stones and pearls.
What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Red Tide,
Shaded Amber and
Indian Summer.
What inspired this design?
The stones to start with and a "day dream" of beautiful places or people from movies, from different places seen on TV, the travel channel.
How did it come together? For example, did you plan it out or did it define itself once you began working?
It came along while I worked with the pieces. Sometimes I do plan, but the finished piece, just not "the plan."
Share Your Background
When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
A little over 10 years ago.
Who introduced you to beading?
Bead and Button magazine. Self taught, mostly through magazines and books.
Do you have an artistic background?
I used to do bead embroidery on dresses for a living, about 18-20 years ago in Vietnam.
How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and BeadsĀ®?
From the cover of Bead and Button magazine.
What other hobbies do you have?
Sewing, gardening and watching TV!
Do you belong to any beading societies or beading groups?
We do not have a beading society and I do not know any groups in my home town. Wish we had one, I can learn more and share my passion.
Beading Success
What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
It is a relaxing therapy and a hobby. Feel satisfied when I finish a piece and get ready for the next challenge.
If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
This is the first contest I've entered. My husband encourages me to try. I really shy away from all professional artists that show their work in Fire Mountain catalogs.
Do you participate in any charity fundraisers?
Do give away some jewelry at work to raise funds for United Way.
Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Never give up.
