|Meet the Designer-Artist
Where do you live?
Describe your artistic style.
What inspires you as a designer-artist?
I love creating something beautiful out of something simple. I live in the country and one of my favorite activities is to take long walks, where I enjoy the beauty and solitude, and my mind can be free and creative. I can be at my workbench creating a design and sometimes my creativity process is interrupted. When this happens I go for a walk, and the beauty of the trees and mountains refreshes my mind and I am inspired and my creativity returns. Then I can't wait to get back to my work room and finish my design.
A person has a choice. They can have a job, or they can work for a company that makes a difference. Fire Mountain Gems has made such a difference in my life. I get to work with very creative people and I am always inspired by them.
What materials do you most enjoy working with?
I love working with metal clay, Kato Polyclay™, crystals, seed beads, gemstones, wire, Omni-Gel™, etc, etc, etc. I love to work with any material that comes my way. I just love working with different materials, and finding unique ways to use them.
What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
What inspired this design?
I needed to make an illustrated use for the Fire Mountain Gems catalog using "Omni Gel" and I thought it would be great to make a jewelry box from a simple little gem vial. It is one of my favorites.
How did it come together?
After I chose the picture and created the transfer the design defined itself.

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
Years ago I was asked to create something to donate to an employee fundraiser. In our lunch room there were some cylinder shaped sugar and cream dispensers, and I visualized candle holders. I found some pictures of Angels, glued them to the dispensers, added some embellishments, attached some canning jar lids and rings to the top and before I knew it they were beautiful candle holders. I was so proud of them. My candle holders were a hit, and I was on my way to creating more beautiful designs for Fire Mountain Gems, family and friends. I have also donated many designs to charitable organizations.
Who introduced you to beading?
I knew very little about jewelry before I started working for Fire Mountain Gems. Then the world opened up to me. It has been such a blessing to work here.
Do you have an artistic background?
I have always been creative but I have never had any formal training.
How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and Beads®?
In 1994, I was working as a cashier for a small local drugstore. We just sold our home and my family wanted to move to the ''valley'' where I was raised. One day, I had an interview at the grocery store, where I worked years ago. Well, after the interview I was so happy and I just knew that I had the job, so I decided to treat myself to lunch at a small Mexican Restaurant. A few of my friends came in and asked me why I was there, I told them that we just sold our house and if I got the job we were going to move back to the ''valley''.
While I was enjoying my lunch I noticed another couple at the restaurant and had no idea who they were. After they finished their lunch Stuart came to my table and asked me if I had ever been a receptionist? I told him no. I have my resume in the car-would you like a copy? He said yes….. The following week Chris and Stuart were shopping at the drugstore, and went thru my cashier line. They encouraged me to apply at Fire Mountain Gems, and I did. That very same week, I had an interview with Chris, Stuart and their dog (PC). PC must have liked me because I was hired and started working the following week. Some jobs are meant to be and Fire Mountain Gems is one of them. Before I worked at Fire Mountain Gems I didn't even know what a jumpring was, I had never touched a computer and look at me now. I am so grateful to Chris and Stuart for the many opportunities. I am so happy to be part of the Fire Mountain Gems Family.
What other hobbies do you have?
I crochet, write poetry, and love to bake.
Do you belong to any beading societies or beading groups?
Not at this time, but who knows!!!
What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
Jewelry-making has been such a positive part of my life. When I am creating, the world goes away and I am free. I am in another world where there are so many possibilities.
If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
No. I love to donate my designs and give them as gifts to family and friends.
Do you participate in any charity fundraisers?
I have donated some of my jewelry to "Zonta", my church and the "Boys and Girls Club" for their fundraisers.
Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Enjoy the time you have and create. There are endless possibilities for you.
