Bead-It-Forward Project 2010 Breast Cancer Quilts
This is the fourth year that Jeanette Shanigan has organized a beaded quilt project (see the December '07 issue of Bead and Button Magazine) for the Bead Artists Against Breast Cancer (BAABC) auction at the annual Bead and Button Show. For the 2010 project, a total of 622 turtle squares were received! With these squares, Jeanette Shanigan sewed together 6 beaded quilts at 100 squares per quilt and embellished a tote bag with the remaining 22 squares. The project is truly all-encompassing as turtle squares were received from 27 US states, Guam and four foreign countries (Canada, England, Germany, Netherlands).
This year, an enthusiastic group from the Greater Albuquerque, New Mexico area contributed the most: 90 squares. Not only that, but they also found a donor who would donate $1,000 to the BAABC cause, if Jeanette Shanigan used their 90 turtle squares to create a unique quilt especially for them; that's why there are only five quilts for the Bead and Button auction. Fire Mountain Gems and Beads has purchased a number of quilts in past auctions, therefore, one of their tote bags was embellished with the "extra squares." To date, Jeanette Shanigan and her many contributors have raised around $14,650 for Bead Artists Against Breast Cancer.
