The 2012-13 holiday season is all about overstated jewelry, filled with bold color, stunning gemstones and crystals and luxurious pearls. Intricately crafted designs with vintage-inspired detail offer a festive feel in over-exaggerated sizes, lengths and multiple layers. Whether it is an extra-long necklace, wide choker, blinding cocktail ring, shoulder-duster earrings or a super sparkly brooch, this holiday’s jewelry brings sophistication and elegance to any attire. Stay on-trend with the following guide to key colors, motifs, materials and jewelry styles for this year’s special occasions.

Design Idea A60K Bracelet Blue is a defining color this holiday, ranging from midnight navy, deep indigo, jewel-like turquoise and everything in between. Add blue tones to jewelry with gemstones such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, sodalite, howlite and aquamarine. Or make a tone-on-tone color statement by incorporating the different shades of blue available in Swarovski crystal, Dione® large-hole beads and Celestial Crystal® beads in the same necklace, bracelet or earrings.

Create high-drama jewelry by adding an unexpected burst of bright color, such as pink, yellow or orange against dark blue, brown or black. Czech pressed glass beads, seed beads and chalk turquoise beads offer perfect pops of color. Yellow gold has star quality this season and is being paired with black for a stunning combination. Soft pastels, powdery pales and shades of grey round out this celebratory color palette and these pleasing tones can be added to jewelry designs with cultured freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystal pearls.

Motifs and Materials

The elegance and glamour of Art Deco combines with a tribal influence for unforgettable holiday jewelry. Geometric shapes, linear symmetry and a modernistic design approach add style and emphasis to pieces. The triangle is a prominent shape in jewelry designs, along with stars, flowers and circles.

Pieces are ornately embellished with crystals, fancy stones, feathers, large pearls and gold-colored chain, beads and components. Filigree metal components give designs dimension and offer intricate detailing. For added holiday flair add leather, lace or velvet material, feathers, buttons or bows.

The choker emerges as the necklace shape for the holiday season, with drop pendants, chain, pearl and crystal embellishment. Worn tightly around the neck, the choker complements a variety of necklines including V-necks, scoop necks and strapless styles. Collar-style necklaces also play a major role, perched on top of necklines and shirts. Both choker and collar-style necklaces draw attention to the neck for a dramatic fashion statement.

On the other end of the spectrum, extra-long necklaces are being shown this season with varying types of chain and a mixture of large and small pearls and beads in the same piece. Multiple strands cascade from the neck or collar and extend down to the waist for a flattering and elongated appearance.
