Have you entered one of our jewelry-making contests and been asked to ship your jewelry design to us for the next round of judging? Read on for some helpful tips on packaging your design entry to minimize the risk of damage during shipping.

You can minimize risk of damage during transit by wrapping--or if possible, rolling up--your design in bubble wrap. Packages are tossed around by shipping handlers, so package your entry with this in mind. Your goal should be to make sure the design is packed securely in the shipping box or container so it won't move or shift.

Key Points to Consider:
  • Insert your name and return address inside the box along with your design
  • Pack your design so it can be unpacked without harming it
  • Before sealing, gently shake the box to make sure your design inside does not move
  • Fill any empty space in the box with cushioning (bubble wrap, tissue or crumpled newspaper)
  • Make sure there is one to two inches of cushioning between box and design
  • Objects pinned to the design may come loose and cause damage to the design
    • Wrap separately if possible and make a note in cover letter
  • Padded mailer envelopes usually will not provide enough protection
List of helpful items for packing:
  • Sturdy box
  • Heavy duty packaging tape for sealing the box
  • Bubble wrap, tissue or dunnage
  • Tape for securing bubble wrap
  • Marking pen
  • Address label

Ship your design using a trackable shipping method. Also, insure the value of the contents and choose the delivery confirmation option. Some designs may require additional attention to packaging. Local shipping companies can help you with proper packaging ideas or materials.

Include a letter or note in the box regarding any special instructions or separately wrapped pieces.

PLEASE NOTE: Following all the above packaging tips won't guarantee your design will arrive intact, but it will make it less likely to get damaged during shipment.
