Magic Marketplace Accessories: TheShow and PoolTradeShow August 2013 Trend Review

We've come back from the MAGIC Marketplace and Accessories: The Show in Las Vegas--two of the preeminent tradeshows for the business of fashion--with a lot of information and ideas to share. After walking the shows for three days, we're pleased to see that business is picking up again for the jewelry-making and fashion accessory industries.

MAGIC Marketplace featured upcoming jewelry trends consumers will see around the globe. AccessoriesTheShow displayed numerous one-of-a-kind design pieces that customers will find essential over the next year. We saw stunning designs, incredible creations and amazing material uses that we think you'll enjoy as much as we did. Want to know what's coming? Here's the skinny:

Colors

After a long absence, black ("Tuxedo") is the commanding neutral for the season. Paired with black, or frequently standing on its own, is the other classic: white ("Divinity"). This is a great opportunity for jewelry makers as almost everything looks amazing mixed with these two ever-popular baseline colors.

The hottest spot colors are coral pinks ("Cactus Flower" and "Potter's Pink" upcoming) and the ever-popular turquoise. Dyed bamboo coral beads, plus Swarovski crystal gemcolors coral pearls, and a wide variety of pale to intense pink shades are pulling Mad Men color palettes into the 21st Century.

Turquoise ("Atlantis") is the other pop of color we saw for 2014. Whether designers opt for the natural gemstone or go for turquoise-colored glass and crystal is up to personal taste and the design's needs. It's the color that matters.

Metals

Metals are being treated as a color for the upcoming season, with many pairings being a metal with black or white. The upcoming star of both shows was rose gold ("Mesa"), with more being used than we've ever seen before.

Yellow gold ("Tamarind and Sandstone") is showcasing a variety of finishes: shiny, matte and some brushed or satin-look surfaces. Silver, however, has gone dark. We saw mostly antiqued or blackened silver ("Platinum") pieces, with very little shine. That was mixed with pewter ("Vapor"), which naturally has a darker color and reaches a more subtle polish than silver.

Other metals were also dark: bronze ("S'mores"), gunmetal ("Shadowed"), antiqued coppers and antiqued brasses.

Techniques

The top five big trends in techniques we saw spanned different kinds of jewelry: necklaces, bracelets and pendants. There was a lot of variety in pendant designs and some interest in interchangeable styles.

While it was definitely hip to be square, rectangle and triangle shapes were also popular, offering clean lines and defined structure.

Bracelets were focused on wire cuffs with decorative ends: balls, triangles, cubes, snake heads and more.

Pendants and drops displayed decorative bezels created using regular chain and colorful cupchain, surrounding regular gems as well as druzy stones. Designers were also focusing on freeform metal shapes, similar to squares and donuts, with turned up edges. The edges were filled with Apoxie® Sculpt and covered with pavé-set crystal chatons.

Products

Romantic, spiritual and neo-gothic trends are still going strong with lockets, crosses and embellished skulls being the most wide-spread themes we encountered, many crossing over from one trend to another with variances in finish or embellishment.

Lockets were mostly metallic and embellished, spanning the range from brightly polished to darkened metal finishes. Crosses, too, were available in an overwhelming range of styles, from the Victorian to the modern. Crosses were also created using almost every color of Swarovski.

Embellished skulls was the third overarching trend we observed. Many of the skulls were embellished completely with Swarovski flat backs, or were wearing metal sunglasses and/or headphones. Skulls were as far from Halloween as they could get, being either blinged out, cute--or both.

We saw embellished beads, coated with tiny crystal or rhinestone flat backs, held in both elaborate and minimal wire caging. They were used for pendants, drops and links.

And finally, snakes. Mostly clasps in the shape of snakes and snake heads, in very shiny gold or embellished with sparkling crystals.

Styles

The biggest influence we saw was contrast. Designers were playing with contrasts in color, formality, length, material and shape:

  • Both freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystal pearls were paired with black or gunmetal chain for jewelry designs
  • Necklace designs were returning to clean lines:
    • Long, belt length, single strand designs putting together smaller gemstone beads (in the 3-4mm ranges) and small 2-3mm metal chains
    • Southwest designs with lots of turquoise and leathers
    • Smaller simple chain necklaces
    • Pendants in the 4x3-inch sizes with double connection rings on either side of the piece
      • Pretty Art Deco shapes
      • Infinity shapes in pendants and bracelets. Usually pretty well blinged out.
    • Necklaces going from 1 strand behind the neck to double strands in front
    • Mixture of leather straps and chain for the necklace
    • Necklaces made with various chains, single strands yet using different chain types for the sides
