As those of us who pay attention to such things have seen, just about any surface is fair game for embellishment with jewelry-making components. A well-known example from the lore of Fire Mountains Gems and Beads® is the famous beaded car, conceived and executed by well-known artist David Best.

The flip-flop (also known by many other names around the globe, including my favorite "go-forwards") is a simple design: a rubber sole and two straps that go along the sides of the foot. Still and nonetheless, despite the simplicity, there is enough real estate for some scintillating spiffing up. And the great thing: there is no right or wrong; any materials you can apply, tie, wrap, fasten or glue ... goes (or, in this case, stays).

Let's get our feet wet and try out a few flip-flop embellishment designs.

Here we have a Design Idea titled By the Sea. Designer Nancy Riegel was a Finalist with this flip-flop entry in the 2007 Fire Mountain Gems and Beads Beading Contest. She used thread to attach a "coral reef" of beads to one of the straps and a row of carnelian chips to the other strap.

As with any embellishment project, wearability is a consideration if the intent is for flip-flops to actually be worn and used as flip-flops as opposed to being wall-mounted or displayed in a case. Providing the thread is not too itchy, these would seem to be eminently wearable.

Jewelry embellishment is a great way of transforming anything that's dull into something much more interesting and attractive. Take, for example, these rather drab flip-flops (below) that we have given lots of sparkle from blue leaf and silver flower Czech pressed glass beads, again, sewn into the straps. Simple, yet very effective. And, again, very wearable.

The last example probably isn't all that wearable, unless you keep these embellished flip-flops (below) away from water and sand. Once again, Czech pressed glass beads are chosen for spiff-up duty. This time Fun Fur Yarn is used to attach the beads to the straps. Feathers, motion strips, fabric flowers and fascinators will also provide lots of body, texture and color. These flip-flops will be lots of fun deckside at a pool party, or any fun event that needs an extra boost of personality.
