Rings say a lot, without saying a word.
Ring on the middle finger? Class of 2000, I see. Index finger? Nice signet ring—you're related to the aristocracy. Pinkie ring? You've got it and you're gonna flaunt it. Midi ring? You don't follow fashion, you make it. And, of course, that ring on the fourth finger of the left hand? You're married.
They got the message, didn't they? And you didn't have to say a word.
Choosing the style of ring to wear is a whole separate discussion. Tradition and culture can put some rules down about what men "get to" wear, what women "have to" wear and other complications.
We're throwing those out the window. This is about the how and where and why of wearing rings—not the style of ring.
Wear what you like.
Left Hand
Right Hand
Each human finger, if intact, has three sections. These are called phalanges and are numbered from the fingertip to the palm (so the phalange with a fingernail is the first phalange). Each phalange is believed to convey meaning, reveal personality or expose character:
First or Upper Phalange
Represents determination and will, focuses on mental activities.
Second or Middle Phalange
Ability to use logic and reason, focuses on business and finance.
Third or Lower Phalange
Represents importance of material gains, focuses on love and the senses.
Remember that fourth-finger-on-the-left-hand symbolism for rings? Other fingers have their own spiritual, cultural and traditional meanings, too. These meanings can be connected to numerology, astrology, crystal work, angels, elements, palmistry and other symbolism:
