PANTONE® 2019 Color of the Year: Living Coral
Living Coral, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2019, features a soft pink hue with a hint of gold. The name Living Coral is inspired by the coral reef, a marine invertebrate, best exemplified by the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. It is the world's largest living organism. The color conveys a sense of vitality, energy, excitement, freshness, new experiences and wellness. It is, as the Pantone Color Institute expresses it, "an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge."
Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral beckons us with its soothing hue that draws upon our inborn affinity to the life-affirming facets of nature's bountiful color palette. As Pantone explains, "In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind. Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Pantone Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color."
Designing with Coral
Coral works well with natural shells and pearls for oceanic or summer-inspired jewelry. For example,
necklace Design Idea 687A, gets an added splash of organic color from coral and mother-of-pearl shell beads.
Turquoise is a great complementary color to coral as seen in
Design Idea 88ZF, a bracelet with red coral frangia branch beads, Hill Tribes silver beads and turquoise seed beads.
Explore the earthy-chic trend through leaf, flower, bird, coral and feather motifs as in
Design Idea A976, a necklace with coral beads, cedar branch drops and seed beads. The earrings of
Design Idea A124 showcase red coral beads and antiqued sterling silver coral branch drops.
Here are some
earrings that combines several of the above concepts: bamboo coral beads, turquoise beads and feathers, into an exotic combination.
Without any help from other colors, coral makes a great showing as the main color focus as in this fun
Lady in Red necklace (Design Idea 88ZF above) of coral beads with black lava beads added for just a little contrast. And, for going pretty much all-coral-all-the-time, you can't beat this multi-strand necklace of coral frangia branch beads and fancy salmon seed beads.
A lighter shade of coral can also be used to create
''blush tone'' jewelry as modeled by this necklace and earring set of bamboo coral beads and Pacific opal Swarovski crystal beads.
How is the Color of the Year chosen? Pantone color experts analyze trends, taking a look at entertainment, new artists, fashion, design and travel destinations. The color choice is also influenced by new technology, social media, materials and textures as well as people at work and play and the colors of nature.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, summarizes the universal appeal of Pantone's Living Coral: "Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities, and this is particularly true for Living Coral. With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord."
