I'm trying to make an ankle bracelet and I want to use some faceted round gemstones, like a 4mm London blue topaz and a heart shaped 4x4mm ruby. How do I go about setting these and other stones so I can hang them from the bracelet?

To hang these gems from an anklet, a Snap-Tite™ pendant setting is your best option. There is a sterling silver heart-shaped setting and a 4mm round setting, both would fit the stones you mentioned perfectly. There is another option for the round stone, it's a Bezelite setting which offers a different look from the Snap-Tite settings. All of the options can then be hung from any chain or link by attaching a jump ring through the loops at the top of the settings.
