Fairycore Jewelry

by Anna Rita Fabiani, Design Idea MH3P

Once upon a time, in faraway lands all over the world, people began inventing new and exciting aesthetics; ways of dressing and decorating their homes and personal spaces to express their artistic abilities, reflect their personalities and spark joy in their everyday lives. Escaping harsh reality to a world of fantasy and magic through jewelry, fashion and décor. The Fairycore aesthetic is as magical and whimsical as its name suggests.

What is Fairycore?

Fairycore style revolves around woodland vibes, earth tones that are bright and happy, and soft browns and grays. There are also warm, glittery pastels and floral colors. The overall palette is soft and muted, with deeper jewel tones as accents. Botanical details are everywhere in this aesthetic--flowers , vines, leaves, trees, branches, berries, mushrooms--anything magical, woodsy and nature-inspired. The look is loosely similar to Cottagecore and Hobbitcore, but with more emphasis on the magical, mystical and ethereal.

Fairycore Fashion | Get the Look

Soft, delicate clothing is a key element of Fairycore fashion, often made of chiffon, lace or other lightweight fabrics. Some styles feature lace and crochet details, embroidery, asymmetrical hems and skirts with fluttering pointed edges. The preferred footwear is dainty flat slippers or lightweight sandals, or even bare feet.

Create headwear for Fairycore with flower crowns, individual hair flowers and hair accessories with floral, butterfly or leaf motifs. Circlets made of wire or dainty chain are also popular, embellished with beads or other components in keeping with the style.

Hair is worn loose, half-up or in quick braids or messy buns for a romantic, natural feel and can be decorated with ribbons.

Fairycore makeup is glittery, shimmery or glowing to look like a magical, luminous being. Pastel nail polish is popular, or no polish at all.

But one needn't dress up like an actual fairy or fairytale character to be part of this delightful trend. It can be as subtle as a lace border on a skirt, a floral print top or dress, or a bit of hand embroidery on a cute hoodie.

Jewelry for the Fairycore Aesthetic

Fairycore jewelry is as whimsical as its fashion and home décor, with an overall organic feel and botanical, often floral, look. The trend as a whole makes use of wing motifs--mostly butterfly and fairy wings. Other popular designs include woodland critters--foxes, deer, squirrels, bunnies and the like. Flower- or vine-themed filigrees, leaf- and flower-shaped beads and pendants are all perfect ingredients for fabulous, fairytale-inspired pieces.

Crystal points are a great way to add a bit of mystical or nature vibes to your Fairycore jewelry, whether in the form of rough or shaped points or briolettes and drops in glass, manmade crystal or gemstones. If you can't find the perfect natural crystal, you can make your own with resin. Add resin dyes to color your custom piece in whatever hue makes you happy and add just about any inclusions, from dried moss and flowers to metal leaf to glitter.

Wire wrapping that's a bit messy can create a more natural appearance--think birds' nests and twig baskets.

Want to weave a bit of fiber art into the trend? Many handicraft techniques such as knitting, crochet, macramé (including its Lilliputian offshoot, micro-macramé) and kumihimo can be used in jewelry-making, too. Add beads to any of these techniques for a bit of glint and sparkle, and choose colors in the soft, muted pastel or nature-y range.

If you want to make your own Fairycore-inspired metal components, metal clay is the perfect medium. The creation process for metal clay is just like something from a fairytale--start with a lump of clay, fire it and out comes a solid metal masterpiece.

For something a bit more unusual and a lot of fun, give elf ears a go. These are basically glorified ear cuffs, usually made of wire-work filigree and curlicues. Make elf ears accented with pressed glass leaves for the ultimate forest fairy look. Other embellishments can include crystal beads, drops or rhinestones for a bit of shimmer, or gemstone beads in matte or glossy finishes.

Other popular jewelry choices include long delicate necklaces, layered bracelets and moonstone or opal rings.

Fairycore Home Décor

Want to decorate your home or personal space in the Fairycore style? Create artwork and figurines depicting fairies and other mythical beings or woodland critters. Drape your bed or window seat with soft materials such as chiffon or fine tulle. Hang silk garlands or strings of appropriately named "fairy lights." Dress up plain mirrors, picture frames and other household items with floral accents, moss, leaf- and butterfly motifs and mushrooms. Live-edge shelves, countertops, tables and benches are perfect for that "tree stump furnishings" look. Tuck plushies of woodland animals here and there (they eat less than their live counterparts!) and go wild with plants.

Switch out standard light fixtures with lamps shaped like luminous blossoms or transform them by adding silk flower petals and leaves. Hang suncatchers of sparkling glass and crystal beads in your windows to scatter rainbow fragments throughout the room. You can even make a chandelier with glass or acrylic flowers and leaves.

A subtler approach (or a transition into the trend) could include vintage furniture with carved or wicker details, a vase of flowers (real or silk) and floral table linens.
