Q.
How did the tradition of throwing beads at Mardi Gras get started? Thanks
- Amanda
A.
While Mardi Gras originated in Medieval Europe in 1702, the tradition of throwing Mardi Gras beads didn't start until the early 1900s in New Orleans. The "Krewes" organizers decided to toss cheap glass bead strands into the crowd from atop the carnival floats. The meaning behind the colors for Mardi Gras is purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power. Fire Mountain Gems offers acrylic beads to string for your Mardi Gras get-together.
