Friendship bracelets are making a comeback. Jewelry designer Rose explains how to knot a friendship bracelet with a repeating heart pattern. In this tutorial she uses two colors of satin cord in an 8-strand pattern. Watch the video then get your cord and follow along with Rose to create your own bracelet.
Cut the following lengths of Satinique 1mm satin cord:
Fold the lengths in half and tie a simple overhand knot, leaving a teardrop-shaped loop approximately 1 inch in length.
Secure the loop to any convenient surface. Use any method that works for you--tape, clip board, hook, or pin it to the leg of your jeans. Arrange the cords in this order:
The heart pattern is a variation of the chevron pattern. It begins with a basic chevron.
Starting with the leftmost turquoise cord, make three forward half hitch knots.
Mirror by creating four backward half hitch knots starting with the rightmost turquoise cord. In the center, create a forward half hitch knot with the two center turquoise cords. This completes a chevron.
Take the second cord from the left, which is now turquoise, and make a backward half hitch knot over the beige cord on the far left. Continue with the beige cord, making two forward half hitch knots into the center of your bracelet.
Mirror by using the turquoise cord, which is the second cord from the right, and make a forward half hitch knot over the beige cord. Continue with the beige cord, making two backward half hitch knots into the center of your bracelet. Make a forward half hitch knot with the two beige cords in the center.
Take the second cord from the left, which is now beige, and make a backward half hitch knot over the turquoise cord which is on the far left. Continue with the turquoise cord, making two forward half hitch knots into the center of your bracelet.

Continue with the turquoise cord, making two backward half hitch knots into the center of your bracelet. Make a forward half hitch knot with the two turquoise cords in the center.
Make a chevron as in Step 3 using the outermost beige cords. This completes the first heart.
Repeat Step 3 to make a turquoise chevron followed by a beige chevron.
Note: To make a bracelet using all beige hearts, repeat Steps 3 - 6 instead.
Now start a blue heart, following Steps 4 - 6 but switch the colors. Take the second cord from the left, which is beige, and make a backward half hitch knot over the turquoise cord, which is on the far left. Continue with the turquoise cord, making two forward half hitch knots into the center of your bracelet. Make a chevron as in Step 3 using the outermost turquoise cords. The second heart is complete.
Make a beige chevron and a turquoise chevron.
Repeat Steps 4 - 11 to finish the bracelet with alternating colors of hearts.
Once you have reached the desired length, finish with two plain chevrons of alternating colors. Use the two cords in the center as your core to make two square knots (macramé technique) with the outer six cords. Trim excess then apply E6000® Fray Lock™ to secure the cord.
Thread #6 seed beads over the remaining two cords. Tie a knot then trim excess cord. Apply E6000 Fray Lock to secure the cord.
