Charm Bracelets

Design Idea MH6V, PA4K

While many are familiar with the popular charm bracelet trend of the 1980s and '90s, modern charm bracelets have changed quite a bit. Instead of simple chains overflowing with charms (often weighing down the wrist), the modern charm bracelet trend is simpler, lighter and more meaningful.

The Look

Modern charm bracelet designs often take inspiration from minimalist fashion trends, usually featuring only one to three charms. Using so few charms allows the designer to choose a specific theme or message for the bracelet, thereby infusing more meaning into each charm. This bracelet, for example, features initials, a "Mom" charm and baby shoes, signifying the strong bonds between a mother and her children. By creating a bracelet with only a few charms, intent is put into the selection of individual pieces, making the design even more special.

Materials

Charms in a variety of sizes and finishes are the star of this trend. Pair them with a variety of materials for stylish appeal. Add them to ready-to-wear chain or bangle bracelets for a quick-and-easy gift or addition to jewelry lines. Attach end caps and clasps to leather or bolo cord, then attach charms next to the clasp for an on-trend, off-center look. For a Bohemian feel, macramé hemp, cotton or nylon cord, or string gemstones on Accu-Flex® beading wire, then add a spiritual or nature-inspired charm. For a simple, polished design, string pearls, glass beads or other subtle elements.

While fewer charms are used than charm bracelets of the past, the style has expanded to include many new materials. While some still use chain, others opt for a more modern look with the use of macramé, wire bangles and more. Leather or bolo cord in bright colors can be used for nature-inspired or masculine bracelets, while beaded bracelets in various materials and color schemes allow for even more customization.

How to Wear It

Modern charm bracelets are as versatile to wear as they are to create. Pair a single bangle with a cozy sweater or show off leather and beaded bracelets stacked on the wrist with short sleeves. Match the color of the bracelets to your outfit, keep them subtle in silver or gold, or create vibrant designs to liven up any look. With the amount of creativity and customization this trend provides, there's no limit to what you can make.
