Instructions
If you do not have a polystyrene cone, make one from cardboard (height 15cm; lower circumference 20cm).
Cut off 3 feet of 20-gauge black-finished wire. Make a simple loop on one end. Twist it back by 360 degrees after 30cm. String the black seed beads onto this wire. The last 10cm should remain empty. Make another simple loop at the end of the wire.
Start winding the wire upwards 3cm from the top of the cone, leaving a tail of unbeaded wire of about 20cm at the top.
Reinforce the first six rows with 28-gauge binding wire. Snip off two segments of binding wire so that they are longer than the cone, as you will also need them on the brim. Create a loop around each row of the beaded wire all the way down the cone on both sides. Regularly tighten the rows.
Affix two more wires onto the fifth row of the beading spiral, between the first two binding wires, using double loops.
Wind the beaded wire around the cone. Every time you pass the binding wire, secure the beaded wire with a loop. If the wire is overly stiff, straighten the bent part again and then bend it again several centimeters later.
Affix another four binding wires to the fourteenth row of beaded wire, using double loops. After completing the hat’s point, this will be the sixteenth row. Continue winding another two rows.
Remove the beaded cone. Place it on the table and wind another four rows in a flat circle around the base. This will create the brim.
Thread one of the colored beads onto a head pin and finish with a simple loop, inserting an oval jump ring before closing the loop. Repeat until you have 14 to 15 drops.
Using the jump rings, hang the colorful beaded drops on the edge of the brim as you wind the wire to finish the brim. String six black seed beads between each colorful drop. Continue until the brim is complete. The link the simple loop at the end of the beaded wire onto the beaded wire to finish.
Cut off the simple loop at the top of the hat and string black seed beads onto the length of empty wire. Wind two rows around the point of the hat and reinforce it with binding wire. Finish the wire with a double wrapped loop.
Wind the overlapping binding wire around the beaded wire twice at the edges of the hat and trim the excess.
