Q.
I am making a walking/hiking stick and have a bear claw I'd like to attach with a leather strand to the stick. What can I put on the bear claw so I can run the leather strand through to attach? Thanks!

A.
Wire-wrapping would be a great option for making a handmade bail to attach to a leather strand.
  • Using flush-cutters, cut a length of wire that allows for multiple wraps around the claw and for creating a bail (probably somewhere between 8 to 10 inches.) Wrap the wire perpendicular to the base of the claw.
  • Wrap the wire around the base three to four times creating an attractive coil to secure the wire in place
  • Bend the wire above the base of the claw and create a loop (a briolette style loop would work nicely here)
  • Bend the wire back down to the wire wraps around the base of the claw
  • Wrap the wire around the base one to two more times
  • Tuck the end of the wire under the edge of the wraps for a finished secure end
